Crescendo - The Capital Campaign for the Dana School of Music
The YSU Foundation and Youngstown State University
The Project
Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music has been a vital piece of the Mahoning Valley for over 150 years. To ensure its longevity at YSU, the YSU Foundation has begun a capital campaign to continue the growth of Dana’s legacy.
The Concept
The Front Page
The front page includes the original scan of sheet music for YSU’s Fight Song. The logo (designed by me) conveys the symbolism of a crescendo through the word but also the symbol beneath it to illustrate its purpose. This is done for those in the target audience - those over 50 with an affinity to YSU, the Dana School, and/or the arts - that may not know what that symbol means. I also included a whole note as the “o” in the logo, as the whole note is the longest note played in music, and the goal of the campaign is to fund the continuation of Dana.
The Interior of the Brochure
A three-panel brochure was chosen for this project to accommodate the amount of content. The first panel discusses the history of Dana from its origin to today. The second panel explains the campaign and shares a message from the Campaign Chair. The third panel includes information on legacy gifts and famous Dana alumni.
Two fermatas and quarter rest served as spacers within the sections. Both act as pauses throughout music; this allows the reader to understand the sections are related while also acting as a pause for the reader to reflect on what they’ve read.
The primary colors for this piece are red, black, and cream. The red is YSU’s signature red, and the cream resembles the color of older sheet music.
Inside Panel
Due to the text heavy content in the inside of the brochure, the exterior of the brochure is image based. A collage was chosen to show off the variety of instruments and activities those enrolled in the school have to choose from. The collage surrounds an auditorium where students are performing, and the angles were chosen to illustrate the music bringing itself to life through simply playing an instrument.
